Several of the clients have expressed concern about the impact of COVID-19 on their income and companies. Tax relief and income support are available to those who have been adversely impacted by the economic slowdown caused by COVID-19.
If your income has been impacted by COVID-19 and you have paid your tax late, including interest and penalties, you may be eligible for a refund of the interest and penalties you paid in error. This tax credit is accessible for all forms of taxes, with the exception of student loans and child support payments.
Remittance of fines and interest charges
When any tax is underpaid as a result of a loss carry-back, you are not permitted to exercise the COVID-19 use of money interest remission provision for the late tax penalty.
Scheme for reclaiming temporary losses
If you do not pay your tax on time, the government may charge you late payment penalties. They will not impose late payment fees on the following items:
The unpaid tax of $100 or less
Student loan installments - although we may levy late payment interest if the amount owed is more than $100.
Amounts of penalties
In the event of late payment, penalties begin to accrue the day after the payment due date. If your tax liability is reassessed, they may establish a new due date for you before charging you with penalties.
Payment penalties may be applied in three stages: first, second, and third.
1 percent penalty is applied the day after the payment due date.
On the seventh day following the payment due date, there is a 4 percent penalty for any unpaid taxes and penalties.
Every month that the outstanding tax, including penalties, is not paid, a one percent penalty is assessed.
Depending on whether this is your first late payment in a two-year period, they may provide you a grace period before charging you with penalties. Your grace period and new due date will be communicated to you by the company. If you do not make payment before the new due date, they will charge you the penalty that was in effect on the previous due date.
These penalty rates do not apply in the case of child support payments. Penalties for failure to pay child support are assessed at varying rates.
Penalties for providing information about one's work
If you submit employment information but do not pay the right amount, you may be required to pay the following penalties and interest:
A penalty for non-payment,
Late payment penalties and interest
The non-payment penalty is equal to ten percent of the amount that is past due. If you continue to fail to pay, a ten percent penalty will be charged to the outstanding balance for each month that the balance is unpaid.
When you pay the overdue amount or enroll in an installment agreement, the 10 percent penalty that was previously assessed will be reduced to just 5 percent.
Penalties imposed by the authorities
Authorities carrying a negative balance in their authority credit account at the end of March will be subject to a ten percent penalty on that amount until the balance is cleared. The negative amount represents more income tax that is owed and the penalty tax that is owed.
